This music class has helped me discover the types of music different cultures have and has also introduced me to a variety of instruments and attire worn when performing music. Since we didn’t get to cover many other countries here are some music genres that I personally enjoy and that helped me learn more about different cultures! ˶ᵔ ᵕ ᵔ˶ ა

| Mexico | North America | Corridos (Traditional) |         Corridos are a traditional music genre that originated in the northern part of Mexico. I chose to include this particular type of traditional music because I was surrounded by this genre growing up. While I was living in Mexico, my grandfather played different types of corridos daily. His particular favorite type was the ones that spoke about romance. Even after leaving Mexico, I continued to be surrounded by the genre thanks to my uncles. Corridos became popular because of its use of storytelling. The genre covers topics of Mexico's history, romance, oppression, and the life of crime. One of my favorite artists was Chalino Sánchez, who wrote the song “Ramoncito Quiñonez.” The song talks about a tragic story about a man who committed suicide over a woman he loved.

| Japan | Asia | J-pop (Modern) |         J-pop is modern music that combines both traditional Japanese music and Western pop. I chose this genre because I absolutely love Jpop. I discovered the genre by watching anime since music is used for the intros. Something I find interesting about the genre is that it doesn't just stick to pop but rather they also mix other genres such as pop-rock, pop-jazz, pop-R&B, and more. One of my favorite songs is called Idol by Yoasobi. The song was used as an opening for an anime called Oshi no Ko. It’s said that it was the highest-ranking J-pop song in history. One of my favorite Jpop groups is Babymetal which is a three-member group, their music is a mix of pop and metal music.

| Puerto Rico | North America | Reggaeton (Modern) |
I love Reggaeton!! I chose this genre because it is another genre I grew up listening to because of my mom. While looking up its origin I found out that it was originally brought to Panama by Jamaican migrants which is interesting. However many people consider Puerto Rico the country where reggaeton was born. This is because it was an underground genre mainly sung in poor communities. Over the years the music genre grew in popularity in Latin America, especially among the youth. The genre explores topics such as love, drugs, and struggles in life. Some of my favorite artists include Daddy Yankee, who many people consider the king of reggaeton, Plan B, Wisin y Yandel, and Bad Bunny.

| South Korea | Asia | K-pop (Modern) |
K-pop is a pop genre that originated in South Korea in the 1990s and was targeted at younger audiences. It's a mix of pop, R&B, electronic, etc. Though when listening to music from the genre it’s easy to tell that it’s heavily inspired by Western hip hop. When researching I found out that K-pop can be traced back to 1885 when a professor called Henry Appenzeller began teaching American and British folk songs to Korean schoolchildren which ultimately laid the foundation of the genre. I chose this genre because I’ve been a fan of the genre since middle school, apart from the music I love watching the performances and different concepts that groups do for their albums. I decided to choose music from my favorite group, Enhypen!

| Conclusion |
I love discovering new music and this class helped finding new music easier to find! While I know most of the genres I chose are considered modern, I specifically chose to go with traditional music when I talked about Mexico because it is something that I listen to in my daily life. It's a genre that my family continues to play when we gather. While I chose two music genres that are in languages that I don’t understand I think most people know that you don’t necessarily need to be fluent in a language to appreciate the music. ྀི ˶• •˶ ྀི

  1. Hello Valeria, first and foremost, I want to say that I did not think that another person in the class listened to BabyMetal, let alone picked the same song from their group. It is interesting to learn that K-pop originated in the 1990s. I think you just added a new group to my Asian pop groups. Enhypen is an amazing group, and I love the way they sound and the way their video looks.
