Music and Me

Hi, my name is Valeria and I’m 18 years old. I was raised by my grandparents in Morelos, Mexico up until starting middle school when I moved to the US. I’m a freshman majoring in computer science and I’m thinking about minoring in data science. Some of my hobbies include running which helps me relax. I like reading manga, my all-time favorite is Jujutsu Kaisen by Gege Akutami. I enjoy cooking for my family and going to conventions with my little brother. I also love embroidering which is something that my grandmother taught me!

Music has always been my favorite thing about life, I’m constantly listening to music regardless of where I'm at. Music has always been part of my life because of my cultural background, genres such as Bandas, Corridos, and reggaeton were some of the first genres I was introduced to. Corridos are my personal favorite because of the use of storytelling, my all-time favorite musician is Chalino Sánchez who is a very popular narcocorrido singer. While these are some of the genres I was introduced to in my childhood, I’ve expanded my music taste. I can listen to any genre except country music.

1. Music I like:

My current go-to music is Rauw Alejandro’s latest album Cosa Nuestra. The album came out in November of last year and it’s been my favorite since then. My top 3 songs on the album are Khé?, Déjame Entrar, and Baja Acá. This album is my go-to because Rauw is one of my favorite artists and this album is completely different from his previous albums. It has a much more mature sound than his previous albums and he stated that it was inspired by classic salsa albums.

2. Music that is important to me:
An example of important music to me is The Weeknd’s Kiss Land album. This album is really important to me because it was the first album I listened to in his discography. My favorite song on the album is Tears in the Rain. In this album, The Weeknd describes the highs and lows in this life while on tour. I first discovered The Weeknd in middle school and fell in love with his music. I love how he switches his sound in each album. In my opinion, he's one of the few artists who has no skips.

3. Music I don't connect with:
An example of music I don’t really like is country music. While I can listen to any music genre, I haven’t been able to connect with this music genre. I found that I don’t like the vocal style that the artists use. Though this doesn’t mean that I think the genre is bad, I can understand why people like it. However, I don’t find myself listening to it anytime soon.

4. Some music I would like to share!: ૮ • ﻌ - ა
Si Antes Te Hubiera Conocido - Karol G
Karol G is one of my favorite musicians, this song is currently one of my favorites because of the soft vocals that she uses and the lyrics are really meaningful.

        Moonstruck - ENHYPEN

Enhypen is my favorite Kpop group. I love this song because of their vocals and the rhythm and beats to the song.

  1. Hey Vale! I also love reggaeton, my roommate is from Puerto Rico and she has been putting me on some fun songs, so I also love "Si Antes Te Hubiera Conocido"!! I also don't really connect to country music but I like Taylor Swift's country era, and I feel like "Our Song" sounds a little more like pop than country, which is probably why I like it- anyways I thought it was interesting that you chose this song to represent country music!

  4. Hi Valeria, I also love manga and am currently finishing up Jujutsu Kaisen and it might be my current favorite manga next to Chainsaw Man or Demon Slayer. I think the most interesting song you posted is Khé? Because the vocals and music are really good, and the lyrics are kinda moody. I think my favorite song on your list is Tears In The Rain because I love the weekend and have listened to them since ~7th grade and that one is really good! I also really don’t like country music and while I can understand how someone would like it; I personally cannot listen to it or enjoy it.

  5. Hey! I totally agree the Weeknd has no skips. The sample of You Belong to Me was my favorite of your post. I find it interesting learning about how your cultural background has shaped your musical interests because you have such deep connected roots to many genres by growing up in Mexico. I loved learning about Rauw Alejandro’s latest album Cosa Nuestra, as I haven't listened to him much. You have definitely got me interested in his music!
