Music and Family

For this blog I decided to interview my beautiful mother, Yeni. She’s a mother of 2 daughters (myself included) and 2 little boys! She was born and raised in Morelos, Mexico and came to the United States at the age of 23, she’s currently 44. Also I wanted to let you know that we did this interview in Spanish since that is our native language so I did my best to translate it in English. ˶ᵔ ᵕ ᵔ˶ ა

Question 1: Me: What is music to you?

Mami: Wow why ask the most difficult question first? Well for me music is more of a distraction. I think a lot of people use music for that purpose as well.

Question 2: Me: What song is the most meaningful for you and why?

Mami: Mis Ojos by Maná. It helped me be more grateful for being alive. I started listening to this song more after coming to the United States. This song reminds me that I should be more grateful for having a healthy body and for being alive. After all you know not everyone is lucky enough to be alive after walking for long periods of time, especially in harsh conditions. Something else I want to add is that this song helped me feel less lonely after sending you to Mexico, I'll be honest with you, I was really lonely without you, I missed you everyday.

Question 3: Me: I'll ask you a question that'll hopefully lead to happy answer, Did you ever listen to music in another language?

Mami: Obviously! While were taught English in school, it was only the basics. Still though, it didn't stop me from listening to American singers. I remember the Backstreet Boys were popular in Mexico. But I'll tell you right now I never cared too much to learn any of the members names. You know I was kinda like you. Even though I didn't have a clue as to what they were singing about I still enjoyed their music. I think that's the good thing about music, you don't have to understand what they're saying to know it's good music. Did you listen to any other artists? Roxette but only a few of her songs.

Question 4: Me: Do you have any stories or memories that involve music?

Mami: I do. I don't remember what year it was but it was when I was still living in Mexico. The song was called Aserejé, it was very popular and I just remember all of my sisters and I listening to it. Overall that song brings me joyful memories and reminds me how much I miss Mexico.

Question 5: Me: Simple question but who is your favorite singer?

Mami: Marco Antonio Solís! Si No Te Hubieras Ido is still one of my favorites.

Question 6: Me: Last one! How does music help you?

Mami: I used to think music didn't help me because it always made me emotional. But in a way it motivates me, especially when we clean on Saturdays. Music also helps me remember the times I used to live in Mexico.

Final thoughts: It was really nice interviewing my mom, If I'm being honest we rarely have full length conversations, this interview helped me learn new things about her. Plus, she really enjoyed answering these questions! *Side note: Her answers sound better in Spanish*˕ -

  1. I interview my mom as well! I agree that music can be a good distraction. I love that the song Mis Ojos helped her as much as it did when she was feeling lonely and that it had such a good impact on her. My mom also loved the Backstreet Boys, I love that they were also known and popular in Mexico as well. I did not know many of the songs or artists your mom talked about so I love that you put them in here, it was nice to hear something so different from what I normally hear.
